If you are staying in Dubrovnik for a few days and would like to see another major Croatian city during your visit, join us on a day trip up the scenic rocky coastline to Split! Your guide is a local who will tell you all about the history and culture of Dalmatia, including why we must pass through Bosnia and Herzegovina in order to get from Dubrovnik to anywhere else in Croatia. (Don't forget your passports!). First point of interest is town Trogir, built on an island and connected to the mainland by bridges, Trogir's historic center dates back to the 3rd century B.C. and was originally a Greek city-state. Split is the beautiful coastal and second largest city in Croatia where Roman Emperor Diocletian built his magnificent palace at the turn of the 4th century. Climb the bell tower of Sveti Duje for a breathtaking view of the port and visit a cathedral that was built as a tomb. During your free time you may want to relax on one of Split's famous sandy beaches or rent a bicycle in park Marjan. On the way back we will drive along highway A-1, leaving the coastline to visit the mountaintop fortress of Klis. You will see how the strategic position of this stronghold guarded Croatian border against the opposing Ottoman Empire for 300 years and enjoy the sunset over the Adriatic before returning to Dubrovnik. This is a privately organized tour, which means you are not going with a guide but your guide is going with you and while we have several visits planned, the time frame is always flexible.
